What is a Personal Relationship with Jesus?

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 14:6 (NLT)

Many of us have tried to live life independently apart from God, only to find that we can’t make it on our own. The Bible tells us in John 15:5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing (NLT) We need a Saviour.

Jesus is the answer we all need. He knows our struggles and forgives our sin and failures just for the asking. When we give our lives to Christ, He’ll pick up the pieces of our broken lives and heal every area that we are hurting. Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT) When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins, and invite Him into our heart, we begin anew. He becomes our personal Savior and walks with us through every aspect of life for the rest of our lives. Salvation is a personal relationship with Jesus.

What is Repentance & Why Do I Need to Be Saved?

Repentance is deep sorrow for anything we’ve done or said, or things we’ve done to offend or dishonor God. Sin separates us from our loving God. Repentance is turning away from our sin.

When we repent of our sins we’re no longer separated from God, and our relationship with Him is restored. 1 John 1:8-9 tells us, If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV)

We sometimes hear terms like Saved, Born Again, Christian, and Believer. All refer to the same process of repenting of our sin and accepting God’s forgiveness through acceptance of the finished work of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ through His death, burial and resurrection. We’re born again, or saved, when we accept His sacrifice for our sins, and become Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.

What Salvation Isn't

Salvation is not a list of rules and regulations, do’s and don’ts. Salvation is a free gift from God and cannot be obtained by any work or effort in our own strength or ability, nor can it be purchased. It has been purchased for us by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and is available simply for the asking. Ephesians 2:9-10 tells us, Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (NLT)

How Can I Be Saved?

All God requires of us to be saved is to acknowledge that we have sinned, repent of our sins, and receive our Salvation by accepting the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ on the cross. In Acts 3:19 we’re told, Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. (NLT) Simply stated, we acknowledge our need of a Savior, turn away from our sin, and invite the Lord Jesus Christ into our heart. Romans 10:9-10 tells us, that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (NKJV) Once we’ve done so, we’re members of the family of God!

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. Ephesians 1:5-7 (NLT)

Prayer for Salvation

Dear Heavenly Father God, thank you so much for providing a way to be restored to relationship with You through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. I repent of my sins. I invite Jesus to come into my heart and be Savior and Lord of my life.

In Jesus Name,

AMEN

If you’ve just prayed that prayer by faith, you’re now a member of the family of God!

Next Steps

Read Your Bible Daily– The Bible is God’s way of sharing His heart with us His children, and every question for life is found within its pages. Spending time with God in His Word daily is the best way to build on your new relationship with Him.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8a (NKJV)

Attend Church Regularly – Church attendance is where the family of God comes together to worship Him, hear His Word, connect with, and serve alongside other Believers. Weekly attendance helps to nurture our faith, grow in our understanding, and build lasting relationships with other Believers.

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:25 (NLT)

Be Water Baptized – In the waters of baptism, our old sinful life is washed away, and we’re raised again to new life! Our old life is gone, and a new life begins!

For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Romans 6:4 (NLT)

Pray Daily – Jesus prayed daily and on several occasions throughout the day to stay in constant fellowship with His Father. Prayer in its simplest form is conversation with God. We can talk to God about our every need and situation, knowing His ear is always open to the prayers, and concerns of His children.

You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. John 16:24 (NLT)
